Melanie Lowe – Award-Winning South African Singer-Songwriter
The Journey
Melanie Lowe is an award-winning South African singer-songwriter celebrated for her honesty, emotional depth, and authenticity. Recognised by SAMRO as one of South Africa’s Top 20 Songwriters, she has built a career defined by creative integrity, vulnerability, and a profound connection with her audience.
Born into a musical family in Durban, South Africa, Melanie’s relationship with music began early and developed naturally. Largely self-taught, she started singing, writing songs, and performing in local venues as a teenager. Her music is rooted in storytelling and emotional truth, prioritising depth over spectacle and connection over trend. Her work has been featured in numerous magazines and media outlets, highlighting her songwriting, voice, and long-term contribution as an independent artist. Whether performing live, teaching guitar and vocals, or collaborating with other musicians, her approach remains grounded, human, and intentional.

Awards, Albums, and Chart Success
Melanie’s early musical journey included co-founding bands with fellow South African musicians, including collaborations with Garth Taylor and Darryl Swart of Tree63. She later became a founding member of the alternative funk-rock band Ichabod (1994–2000), serving as lead singer, rhythm guitarist, and songwriter. Their debut album, The Other Side, received regional acclaim and national airplay, featuring the chart-topping single Tonight. Ichabod’s dynamic blend of rock, funk, and jazz influences helped shape Melanie’s lifelong commitment to originality and musical exploration.
In 2002, Melanie became a standout finalist on the inaugural season of Idols South Africa. Branded by national media as “the dark horse of the competition,” she advanced to the final show alongside Brandon October, with both finishing as runners-up to Heinz Winckler. Her sincerity and distinctive voice captured audiences nationwide, establishing her as a national favourite and launching her solo career.
A major milestone followed when Melanie co-wrote and performed the theme song for Big Brother 2 South Africa alongside fellow Idols finalist Ezra Lingeveldt. The single won a South African Music Award for Best Pop Single, marking a defining moment in her career.

She later reunited with Garth Taylor to record an EP featuring their duet Islands in the Stream. The release topped South African charts and led to extensive national touring, with shows widely praised for their originality and emotional connection.
Melanie went on to release two acclaimed studio albums through Adventure Music – Yesterday’s Diary and Unspoken Truth. Along- side Unspoken Truth, she released a five-track Afrikaans EP titled As, which included the duet Love Can Build a Bridge with Afrikaans artist Cheré.
Although Melanie is primarily an English-language songwriter, invitations to perform at Afrikaans music festivals inspired her to write and record original material in Afrikaans. Determined to approach the project authentically, she wrote her own songs rather than re- cording covers, working closely with her Afrikaans-speaking producer to ensure accurate pronunciation and emotional integrity. Un- spoken Truth and As were released concurrently as separate CDs, with tracks from As remaining favourites on RSG.
Through her independent label, Mellow Music, Melanie later released her third studio album, I Choose Me. Released following her public coming out and same-sex marriage, the album marked a deeply personal chapter in her life. The title track became an anthem of self-acceptance, authenticity, and the courage to live openly.
Singles from Yesterday’s Diary, including Strange Emotion and If I Could, topped charts nationwide. Unspoken Truth earned Melanie a SAMA nomination for Best English Adult Contemporary Album and produced several national chart-topping songs, including Sweet- est of Rhymes and Come Back Home. Every song across these releases was written by Melanie herself.

Collaboration, Bands, and Recorded Work
Over the years, Melanie has shared stages and collaborated with numerous South African and international artists, including Westlife, Katie Melua, Sam Bettens (K’s Choice), Hothouse Flowers, Prime Circle, Tree63, Watershed, Danny K, The Parlotones, Nianell, Kurt Darren, Lebo M, Vicky Sampson, Wendy Oldfield, Theuns Jordaan, Juanita du Plessis, Nicholas Louw, Garth Taylor, Bok van Blerk, Dozi, Karen Zoid, Chris Chameleon, Nádine, Bobby van Jaarsveld, and Timothy Moloi.
In addition to live performance collaborations, Melanie has contributed vocals to other artists’ recordings. Notably, she appeared on Watershed’s album Wrapped in Stone, performing on the track Refuse to Move at the invitation of lead singer Craig Hinds.
Following years of intensive touring, Melanie joined the South African band The Reckoning as co-lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, performing alongside Stuart Irving. During this period, the band recorded original material, including the track Burn the Room, and performed live as a collaborative project rather than a solo vehicle. This chapter marked a shift toward shared creative expression and balance after years of front-facing solo work.

A Different Kind of Performance
Melanie is a three-time consecutive winner of the Pioneer Rally, a demanding driver-and-navigation competition that pairs drivers with blind navigators. Competing against experienced drivers, fellow artists, and professional athletes, she and her navigator secured first place three years in a row.
The rally demands exceptional trust, communication, and precision – with the driver relying entirely on verbal directions from a navigator reading from a Braille manual, and the navigator relying fully on the driver not only to follow those instructions, but to keep them safe.
This achievement highlights Melanie’s ability to perform under pressure, her deep respect for partnership, and her commitment to inclusive, purpose-driven challenges beyond the music stage.

Touring, Teaching, and Giving Back
For more than a decade, Melanie toured extensively across South Africa, sometimes performing multiple shows in a single day. Her touring schedule included hundreds of school performances nationwide, all presented without financial benefit to herself; children were asked to bring a donation of no less than R2 to attend.
Through these performances, she used music to promote empathy, inclusion, and awareness around intellectual and physical disabilities, ultimately raising over R100,000 for the Little Eden Society, for whom she served as an ambassador. Her single If I Could, from Yesterday’s Diary, was written specifically for the residents of Little Eden, offering their perspective and asking others to give differently-abled people a chance to be heard and understood.

Music & Artistry
At the core of Melanie’s work is songwriting. Her songs are narrative-driven, emotionally precise, and unafraid of stillness. She writes about connection, loss, growth, and identity without overstating the moment or forcing resolution.
Her recordings and live performances favour authenticity over polish. The focus is on voice, guitar, and lyric – allowing listeners to meet the song where it is, rather than where it is expected to go. This philosophy carries through to her live shows, which range from intimate solo performances to fuller band settings, always shaped by the space, the audience, and the energy of the room.

Teaching & Mentorship
Alongside her performing career, Melanie is a dedicated guitar teacher, offering beginner lessons to both children and adults. Her teaching style is patient, adaptable, and particularly supportive of neurodivergent learners.
Lessons are grounded in encouragement and curiosity rather than rigid technique, helping students build confidence, musical understanding, and a genuine relationship with their instrument. Teaching is not a side project for Melanie – it is an extension of her belief that music should be accessible, empowering, and personal.

Today
Today, Melanie continues to write, perform, and teach from Durban, while also offering online lessons. Her work spans live performance, recording, education, and collaborative projects, all held together by a consistent ethos of care, clarity, and intention.
Whether on stage, in a lesson, or behind the scenes, Melanie’s focus remains the same: meaningful connection through music, built slowly and honestly.
